Control tells story of Joy Division, Ian Curtis
The June 23rd DVD release Control tells the disturbing tale of Joy Division, and its lead singer, Ian Curtis. Considered by punk rock music buffs to be a precursor to the saga of Kurt Cobain and Nirvana, the life of Ian Curtis and his British rock band are eerily similar.
Control portrays the personal, health, and other life struggles faced by the depressed Curtis, who committed suicide at the age of 23. The Circa-1980s band, Joy Division, has been relatively underrepresented in historical discussions of important rock bands, however, books, and the new movie, have helped bring to light the social and musical impact of the band and its unique lead singer.
Ian Curtis had epsilepsy, a strange dance style, and was a charismatic and intriguing front man to the Manchester, England based Joy Division. While many people have heard of Curtis and Joy Division, some are unaware that the critically and commercially successful band New Order (hits like Regret and Faith) spawned from the members of Joy Division left behind when Curtis killed himself. For 20 years, the band has carried forward the innovative and ground breaking musical personality first realized by Joy Division in the late 1970s and into 1980.
