Vantage Point and In Bruges a clever movie combo
Movie Room Reviews just added a couple solid watches to its movie review features. The just released comedy drama In Bruges stars Colin Farrell as a troubled hit man who is hunted by his boss for killing a little boy in a botched hit. This cleverly written drama movie is full of action, but it is the humorous writing and clever dialog that really makes it a winner. Check out the full Movie Review!
Vantage Point, set to be released on DVD July 1, stars Dennis Quaid as an experienced, but shaken Secret Service Agent positioned to help guard the president as he prepares to speak in Spain. The first several scenes of the movie present the president being shot from several different character “vantage points”. The movie is an intense race to protect the president and find the assassins. My Mom’s New Boyfriend starring Antonio Banderas and Meg Ryan
Antonio Banderas and Meg Ryan mix it up in the DVD release My Mom’s New Boyfriend. Colin Hanks returns as a son, Henry, who went away for three years for FBI training and returns to find his mom (Ryan) having lost a ton of weight, gained a youthful exuberance and acquired lots of money. With his new fiancee Emiy (Selma Blair), Henry settles in thinking he would find a fairly peaceful family existence in his new home arrangement. Soon, however, he finds himself torn between his career and his mom when her new boyfriend Tommy (Banderas) turns out to be a world class art thief.

The Color of Freedom tells controversial story of Nelson Mandela-James Gregory
The biographical, historical drama movie The Color of Freedom stars Joseph Fiennes and Dennis Haysbert. Fiennes plays James Gregory, a prison guard at Robben Island where Nelson Mandela (Haysbert) is initially detained after his arrest. The movie, based on the controversial memoirs of the real life James Gregory, is a gripping and pointed introspective about real life people involved in a troubling, but important time in world history – the South African apartheid. Since the 2007 UK release of the movie The Color of Freedom, much of Gregory’s account of his relationship with Mandela has been called into question. Mandela, in his own authorized biography of his time in detention, says he actually had very little interaction with Gregory and that much of his account in the movie is grossly exaggerated. Research following the May 2007 release of the UK version actually suggests another prison guard was more similar to the character James Gregory in the movie, than Gregory himself. Regardless of the controversy, the movie offers much in the way of bringing humanity to a troubling time.

EW ranks 100 top movie classics from 1983-2008
Entertainment Weekly recently wrote about 100 movies (see their list below) from 1983 to 2008 that it believes will be classics in the future. They call them the New Classics. I have BOLDED the ones I have watched – about 80%. Do you agree, disagree with the movies on their list? Definitely a pretty good list. I was more surprised at the order at times than movies included. I think the most difficult thing is to compare movies of the late 80s/early 90s with 2000+ movies as some of the earlier ones seem to be “classics” already. A little surprised about The Office Space (73), Napoleon Dynamite (90), and a few others that were lower on the list given their position as cultural classics. South Park (100) was a bit surprising on a list of classics. What do you think?

Alison Eastwood, daughter of Clint Eastwood, makes her directorial debut in the touching DVD movie drama Rails & Ties. Railroad engineer Tom Starks (Kevin Bacon) is struggling to cope with his wife Megan’s (Marcia Gay Harden) terminal cancer. He struggles even more when his train hits and kills a suicidal mother and he realizes he is numb to his feelings.
Davey (Miles Heizer), the boy of the mother who killed herself is initially placed with a foster mother determined to discipline. Davey runs away the first night in his new home and tracks down Tom’s address. He confronts Tom about killing his mother and after a heated confrontation, they settle down to have a conversation about the details of the wreck and what happened.
Regretting that she and Tom never had kids, Megan feels a special connection to Davey and does not want to turn him into the police. She persuades Tom that they should keep him with them and care for him for the time being. Tom reluctantly agrees and he and Davey begin to develop an awkward relationship. Tom is somewhat put off by Davey’s overdeveloped maturity and his desire to bond. He is not sure how to feel as he struggles with his guilt over the train accident.

Fool’s Gold starring Kate Hudson and Matthew McConaughey
Fool’s Gold was a reunion of sorts for Kate Hudson and Matthew McConaughey. Reprising the romantic connection they made as boyfriend-girlfriend in the 2003 DVD release How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days, the two are husband and wife, and then ex-husband and wife, and then husband and wife again in this romantic comedy adventure movie. Fool’s Gold is an adventure movie full of danger and excitement as Ben and Tess Finnigan search for a long lost buried treasure. They are not the only ones interested in the treasure, however, and their rivals are not nice.

Jumper starring Hayden Christensen
Jumper starring Hayden Christensen is certainly an original film concept. The movie is about a unique group of people with the ability to self transport (Jumpers) who are hunted by Paladins, a group who has a purpose to kill Jumpers. Roland (Samuel L. Jackson) leads the antagonists in this modestly developed story with some action and adventure movie elements. The special effects are good, but is this movie worth watching? Find out at Movie Room Reviews and read other great movie reviews!
The Bucket List starring Nicholson and Freeman

Control tells story of Joy Division, Ian Curtis
The June 23rd DVD release Control tells the disturbing tale of Joy Division, and its lead singer, Ian Curtis. Considered by punk rock music buffs to be a precursor to the saga of Kurt Cobain and Nirvana, the life of Ian Curtis and his British rock band are eerily similar.
Control portrays the personal, health, and other life struggles faced by the depressed Curtis, who committed suicide at the age of 23. The Circa-1980s band, Joy Division, has been relatively underrepresented in historical discussions of important rock bands, however, books, and the new movie, have helped bring to light the social and musical impact of the band and its unique lead singer.
Ian Curtis had epsilepsy, a strange dance style, and was a charismatic and intriguing front man to the Manchester, England based Joy Division. While many people have heard of Curtis and Joy Division, some are unaware that the critically and commercially successful band New Order (hits like Regret and Faith) spawned from the members of Joy Division left behind when Curtis killed himself. For 20 years, the band has carried forward the innovative and ground breaking musical personality first realized by Joy Division in the late 1970s and into 1980.
